It extends mainly across the Jharsuguda and Sundargarh districts and is associated with the Ib River, a tributary of the Mahanadi River system. The region is known for its Gondwana-age coal deposits and primarily contains Non-Coking Coal used in thermal power generation. Important coal mines in this region include Lakhanpur, Belpahar, and Samaleswari. These mines are operated mainly by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL).

Tatapani–Ramkola Coalfield is located in the Balrampur-Ramanujganj region of northern Chhattisgarh.
