The Swadhar Scheme was launched by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India for women living in difficult circumstances without adequate family or social support.
The Scheme was launched in 2001-02. Its beneficiaries particularly included—
destitute widows deserted by their families,
women released from prison without family support,
women rendered homeless by natural disasters,
rescued or trafficked women and girls,
victims of sexual crimes,
women affected by terrorist violence without support,
and other women in difficult circumstances.
The Scheme was not limited to providing shelter. It also provided food, clothing, health care and counselling, along with measures for education, awareness, skill upgradation and socio-economic rehabilitation.
Current Status
The arrangement subsequently continued as Swadhar Greh. Under the present Mission Shakti, Swadhar Greh and Ujjawala Homes have been merged into “Shakti Sadan”, an integrated relief and rehabilitation home for women in distress and difficult circumstances, including trafficked women.
