A.

Matangini Hazra

B.

Kanak Lata Barua

C.

Shanti Ghosh

D.

Aruna Asaf Ali

Correct Answer: C

Detailed Solution

Shanti Ghosh was not associated with the Quit India Movement; her major revolutionary activity belonged to 1931.

Matangini Hazra was actively associated with the Quit India Movement. In 1942, she participated in the mass movement against British rule in the Tamluk region of Bengal. On 29 September 1942, she led a large procession and was killed in police firing while advancing with the movement.

Kanak Lata Barua was also associated with the Quit India Movement. On 20 September 1942, at Gohpur in Assam, she led a procession carrying the Tricolour to hoist the national flag at the police station. She was killed in police firing.

Aruna Asaf Ali was one of the prominent women leaders of the Quit India Movement. After the arrest of the top Congress leadership in August 1942, she unfurled the national flag at the Gowalia Tank Maidan in Bombay and subsequently continued the movement while remaining underground.

In contrast, Shanti Ghosh's major revolutionary activity took place in 1931. She was associated with the Yugantar revolutionary organisation. Along with her companion Suniti Chowdhury, she shot and killed the District Magistrate of Comilla, C. G. B. Stevens, on 14 December 1931.

After the incident, Shanti Ghosh was sentenced to life imprisonment. She was spared the death penalty because of her young age and was released in 1939. Her principal historical association was therefore with the revolutionary movement of the 1930s rather than the Quit India Movement of 1942.
