Rabindranath Tagore returned his ‘Knighthood’ in protest against the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre.

On 13 April 1919, British troops opened fire on an unarmed gathering at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar. The incident generated deep anger across India and intensified opposition to the repressive policies of British rule.

Rabindranath Tagore had been awarded a Knighthood by the British Crown in 1915. After the Jallianwala Bagh incident, he no longer considered it appropriate to retain this honour.

Around 29–30 May 1919, Tagore wrote to Viceroy Lord Chelmsford announcing his decision to renounce the Knighthood. He made it clear that retaining a government honour in such circumstances would separate him from Indians who had suffered humiliation and repression.

It is important to distinguish this event from the actions of the other options. Shankaran Nair was associated with resigning from the Viceroy's Executive Council after the events surrounding Jallianwala Bagh, whereas Tagore specifically returned the Knighthood.

Similarly, Muhammad Ali Jinnah's major protest was connected with the Rowlatt Act; he resigned from the Imperial Legislative Council. His action was therefore different from Tagore's renunciation of the Knighthood.

Tagore's decision was not merely the surrender of a personal honour, but an important public and moral protest against the repression at Jallianwala Bagh.
