Previous Year Question

Among the following, who was not a proponent of bhakti cult?

A.
Nagarjuna
B.
Tukaram
C.
Tyagaraja
D.
Vallabhacharya

Correct Answer: A

Detailed Solution

Nagarjuna was not a proponent of the Bhakti cult. He was a celebrated Mahayana Buddhist philosopher, generally placed around the second century CE, and was associated with the Madhyamaka school of Buddhist philosophy. The central concept of his philosophy was Śūnyatā (emptiness). His celebrated philosophical work, the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā, is a foundational text of Madhyamaka philosophy.

In contrast, the other three figures are clearly associated with traditions of Bhakti. Tukaram was a saint-poet of the Varkari Bhakti tradition of Maharashtra and a devotee of Vitthala. Tyagaraja was a great saint-composer of Carnatic music and a devotee of Rama; devotion to Rama forms the central theme of most of his compositions. Vallabhacharya founded the Pushtimarg and emphasized devotion to Krishna, particularly child Krishna.
