Pyrometer ऐसा temperature-measuring instrument है जिसका उपयोग विशेष रूप से बहुत अधिक तापमान मापने के लिए किया जाता है। Radiation pyrometer वस्तु के सीधे contact में आए बिना उसके द्वारा emitted thermal radiation को detect करके temperature निर्धारित करता है।

किसी गर्म वस्तु से निकलने वाली electromagnetic radiation उसके temperature से संबंधित होती है। Temperature बढ़ने पर emitted radiation की intensity और spectral distribution में परिवर्तन होता है। Radiation pyrometer इसी radiation को measure करके वस्तु का temperature ज्ञात करता है।

इसका बड़ा advantage यह है कि यह non-contact measurement कर सकता है। इसलिए molten metals, furnaces तथा ऐसी बहुत गर्म या दूर स्थित वस्तुओं का temperature मापा जा सकता है जिनके साथ ordinary thermometer का direct contact कठिन या असुरक्षित हो।

Thermo-electric thermometer सामान्यतः thermocouple के thermo-electric effect पर आधारित होता है। Gas thermometer gas के pressure या volume में temperature के साथ होने वाले परिवर्तन का उपयोग करता है, जबकि Liquid thermometer liquid के thermal expansion पर आधारित होता है।
