Detailed Solution

Keibul Lamjao National Park is situated in the south-eastern part of Loktak Lake in Manipur. It is internationally known for its unique floating wetland ecosystem.

The most distinctive feature of the National Park is the presence of Phumdis. Phumdis are floating masses composed of soil, decomposed organic matter and vegetation. A major portion of the National Park occurs on these floating masses.

Keibul Lamjao is commonly described as the world's only floating National Park. It extends over approximately 40 sq km and forms an extremely important part of the Loktak wetland ecosystem.

The Park is particularly famous for the conservation of the Sangai, scientifically known as Rucervus eldii eldii and also called the Manipur Dancing Deer. It is the State Animal of Manipur, and the Keibul Lamjao landscape represents its last natural habitat.

The National Park was notified in 1977. It represents a distinctive combination of aquatic wetland and terrestrial ecosystem characteristics.
