हर वर्ष 16 सितम्बर को International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, जिसे सामान्यतः World Ozone Day कहा जाता है, मनाया जाता है। संयुक्त राष्ट्र भी इसकी आधिकारिक तिथि 16 September बताता है।
इस तिथि का संबंध Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer से है। Montreal Protocol पर 16 सितम्बर 1987 को हस्ताक्षर किये गये थे। यह agreement Ozone Layer को नुकसान पहुँचाने वाले Ozone-Depleting Substances (ODS) के production और consumption को नियंत्रित तथा phase out करने के लिए बनाया गया था।
संयुक्त राष्ट्र महासभा ने 1994 में Resolution 49/114 द्वारा 16 सितम्बर को International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer घोषित किया। इसका observance 1995 से शुरू हुआ।
Ozone Layer मुख्यतः Stratosphere में स्थित Ozone-rich region है और सूर्य से आने वाली harmful Ultraviolet radiation के बड़े भाग को absorb करके पृथ्वी पर जीवन की रक्षा करती है। लगभग 90% atmospheric Ozone Stratosphere में पाई जाती है।
