Lichens वायु की गुणवत्ता के अत्यंत उपयोगी Bioindicators हैं। किसी organism की उपस्थिति, अनुपस्थिति, abundance या physiological condition से यदि environmental quality के बारे में जानकारी मिलती है, तो उसे Bioindicator के रूप में उपयोग किया जा सकता है।

Lichen वास्तव में एक अकेला organism नहीं है। यह सामान्यतः Fungus और photosynthetic partner—Green Alga या Cyanobacterium—का symbiotic association होता है। Fungal component को Mycobiont और photosynthetic component को Photobiont कहा जाता है।

Lichens में higher plants की तरह विकसित roots और protective cuticle नहीं होती। वे वातावरण से moisture और dissolved substances सीधे absorb करते हैं। इसलिए atmospheric pollutants भी उनके tissues में आसानी से पहुँच सकते हैं।

अनेक Lichen species विशेष रूप से Sulphur Dioxide (SO₂) और दूसरे atmospheric pollutants के प्रति संवेदनशील होती हैं। इसी कारण किसी क्षेत्र में Lichens की diversity और abundance का अध्ययन करके वहाँ की long-term air quality के बारे में जानकारी प्राप्त की जा सकती है। Botanical Survey of India भी Lichens के व्यापक उपयोग को air-quality bioindicators और biomonitoring से जोड़ता है।
