Coral Reefs पृथ्वी के अत्यधिक species-rich ecosystems में शामिल हैं। बहुत छोटे क्षेत्र में बड़ी संख्या में fishes, molluscs, crustaceans, sponges, echinoderms तथा अनेक अन्य marine organisms पाए जाते हैं।
Coral colonies एक जटिल three-dimensional habitat बनाती हैं। इसमें cavities, crevices और विभिन्न microhabitats उपलब्ध होते हैं, जिनसे अनेक species को shelter, feeding grounds, breeding sites तथा nursery areas मिलते हैं। इसी structural complexity के कारण एक ही reef ecosystem में बहुत बड़ी संख्या में species coexist कर सकती हैं।
Coral Reefs समुद्र तल के 1% से भी कम भाग पर पाए जाते हैं, लेकिन वे लगभग एक-चौथाई समुद्री species को habitat प्रदान करते हैं। इसी असाधारण biodiversity के कारण इन्हें प्रायः “Rainforests of the Sea” कहा जाता है।
Tropical Rain Forest भी अत्यधिक biodiversity वाला ecosystem है और terrestrial ecosystems में इसकी species richness बहुत अधिक होती है।
