Previous Year Question

Among the biotic components of the ecosystem, the producer system is

A.

Cow

B.

Peacock

C.

Tiger

D.

Green Plants

Correct Answer: D

Detailed Solution

The Biotic Components of an ecosystem are mainly classified as Producers, Consumers and Decomposers according to the way they obtain nutrition.

Green Plants are Producers because they manufacture their own food through Photosynthesis using energy from sunlight. Therefore, they are also known as Autotrophs.

During Photosynthesis, green plants mainly use Carbon Dioxide and Water to produce carbohydrates and convert solar energy into chemical energy.

In an ecosystem food chain, Producers generally occupy the First Trophic Level. The organic matter and stored energy produced by them are transferred to herbivores and subsequently to higher consumers.

The other three organisms given—Cow, Peacock and Tiger—are Consumers. They cannot manufacture their own food and depend directly or indirectly on Producers.
