Wireless communication is reflected to earth’s surface by

A.

Troposphere

B.

Stratosphere

C.

Ionosphere

D.

Exosphere

Correct Answer: C

Detailed Solution

The Ionosphere is a region of the Earth's upper atmosphere containing large numbers of electrically Charged Particles and Free Electrons. It extends approximately from 60 to 1,000 kilometres above the Earth's surface, although its boundaries vary, and most of it lies within the Thermosphere. The principal characteristic of the Ionosphere is its ability to bend radio waves of certain frequencies back towards the Earth's surface. This property makes it important for long-distance Wireless Communication.

The Ionosphere is formed primarily by Ultraviolet Radiation and X-rays from the Sun. These high-energy radiations remove electrons from atmospheric atoms and molecules. This process is known as Ionization. As a result, Positive Ions and Free Electrons are produced. The Ionosphere is generally divided into three major regions—D, E, and F. The D region plays an important role in the absorption of radio waves, whereas the E and F regions can return radio waves towards the Earth's surface under suitable conditions.

In wireless communication, Sky Wave Propagation occurs when radio waves transmitted from a Transmitting Antenna reach the Ionosphere and return towards the Earth's surface. This process is commonly used for long-distance communication involving High Frequency (HF) radio waves in the approximate range of 3–30 Megahertz (MHz). Scientifically, the return of radio waves mainly results from gradual Refraction within the Ionosphere, although it is commonly described as Reflection. This mechanism enables radio communication beyond the distance limitation imposed by the Earth's curvature.

Among the other options, the Troposphere is the lowest atmospheric layer, where clouds, rainfall, and most weather phenomena occur. The Stratosphere contains the Ozone Layer, which absorbs harmful Ultraviolet Radiation from the Sun. The Exosphere is the outermost atmospheric region, where the density of gases is extremely low. Although electromagnetic wave propagation can also be influenced by these atmospheric regions, the primary mechanism described in the question, which returns certain radio waves towards the Earth's surface, is associated with the Ionosphere.
