The National Lake Conservation Plan (NLCP) was implemented for pollution control, conservation and restoration of lakes.
As of 2009–10, the scheme covered 58 lakes in 14 States. These included Nainital and Bhimtal lakes in Uttarakhand.
Ooty Lake was among the initial lakes under the NLCP. The NLCP began in June 2001 with the Conservation and Management Plans of Powai, Ooty and Kodaikanal lakes.
Current Status
Later, the National Lake Conservation Plan (NLCP) and the National Wetlands Conservation Programme (NWCP) were merged into the National Plan for Conservation of Aquatic Ecosystems (NPCA). The merger was approved in February 2013.
