Previous Year Question

Which one of the following is the busiest ocean trade route?

A.

Cape of Good Hope

B.

Panama Canal

C.

Suez Canal

D.

North Atlantic

Correct Answer: D

Detailed Solution

The Northern Atlantic Sea Route connects the north-eastern United States with north-western Europe. These have historically been among the world's highly developed industrial and commercial regions.

Major economic centres and advanced ports are located on both sides of this route. Consequently, manufactured goods, machinery, industrial raw materials and other commodities are transported on a very large scale.

According to NCERT, foreign trade over this route is extremely large and it is described as the busiest sea route in the world. For this reason, it is also known as the “Big Trunk Route.”

It should be noted that the Suez Canal and Panama Canal are individual canals, whereas the question asks about a broader ocean trade route.
