The Obra Thermal Power Station is located in the Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh. It was established with technical assistance from the then Soviet Union (USSR/Soviet Russia).

The region has been an important energy-producing area of Uttar Pradesh. Major power projects such as Obra, Anpara and Rihand are located in Sonbhadra, making it one of the state's important power-producing regions.

Soviet technology and technical assistance played an important role in the initial generating units of the Obra project. In later years, several units of the station also underwent Renovation and Modernisation (R&M).

Here, Soviet Russia refers to the then Soviet Union (USSR) and not merely to the present-day Russian Federation.
