Detailed Solution

Exercise Malabar is a naval exercise that began in 1992 as a bilateral exercise between the navies of India and the United States.

In Malabar-2009, the Indian Navy, United States Navy and Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) participated.

In 2009, the Indian Navy's Eastern Fleet exercised with the U.S. and Japanese navies under Exercise Malabar. Its purpose included strengthening interoperability, operational coordination and maritime cooperation among the participating naval forces.

An important fact regarding Japan's participation is that Japan took part in Malabar in 2007, 2009 and 2014, and later became a regular participant from 2015.
