Detailed Solution
Anuradha Roy received the Sahitya Akademi Award 2022 for her English novel All the Lives We Never Lived. The novel was first published in 2018. The Sahitya Akademi selected it for the 2022 award in the English-language category.
The novel revolves around the lives of Myshkin and his mother, Gayatri. Gayatri is an artistically inclined woman who seeks freedom from social conventions and family restrictions. The story follows Myshkin's attempt to understand why his mother left the family and the circumstances surrounding her decision.
The novel is set against the historical background of the 1930s and 1940s, when India's independence movement against British rule was underway and the circumstances of the Second World War were unfolding. It explores personal freedom, family relationships, art, nationalism, and the effects of political change. Anuradha Roy's other notable novels include An Atlas of Impossible Longing, The Folded Earth, and Sleeping on Jupiter.
The Sahitya Akademi Award is one of India's major literary honours. The Sahitya Akademi annually recognises outstanding literary works published in various Indian languages.
