Detailed Solution
The Government of India initiated the Indian Institutes of Skills (IIS) as world-class skill-training institutions. In 2019, the proposal to establish three IISs at Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Kanpur was approved.
Among them, the Indian Institute of Skills at Mumbai became operational first. Its first batch was inaugurated on 25 December 2020. It was developed through a Public-Private Partnership between the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and the Tata Group.
The initial batch offered courses related to Factory Automation. The objective of IIS is to move beyond conventional skill training and develop highly skilled manpower for advanced manufacturing and Industry 4.0 technologies.
Training focuses on advanced areas such as factory automation, digital manufacturing, mechatronics, Artificial Intelligence, data analytics and additive manufacturing, with a strong emphasis on practical and industry-oriented learning.
Current status: On 9 October 2024, the Prime Minister formally inaugurated the Indian Institute of Skills, Mumbai. It has been developed with the capacity to train around 5,000 students annually in Industry 4.0 and emerging technologies.
