Previous Year Question

Which one of the following natural regions is known as ‘Land of Big Games’?

A.

Temperate Grassland

B.

Tropical Monsoon Region

C.

Hot Desert Region

D.

Tropical Savanna Region

Correct Answer: D

Detailed Solution

The Tropical Savanna is commonly known as the “Land of Big Games” because it supports a very large diversity and population of big wild animals.

The Savanna is essentially a tropical grassland characterised by tall grasses with widely scattered trees. Rainfall is not evenly distributed throughout the year; instead, the region experiences distinct wet and dry seasons.

Large herbivores found in this region include elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, rhinoceroses and several species of antelopes. Large carnivores such as lions, cheetahs, leopards and hyenas are also common.

Its most famous development occurs in Africa as the Sudan-type Savanna. Savanna grasslands are also found as the Llanos and Campos of South America and in northern Australia.

The characteristic vegetation includes trees such as Acacia and Baobab, which are adapted to the prolonged dry season.

Because of this remarkable concentration of large wildlife, the region became historically famous for big-game hunting and came to be known as the “Land of Big Games.”
