Previous Year Question

The First Union Territory of India to run 100 percent on solar energy is

A.

Andaman-Nicobar

B.

Chandigarh

C.

Diu

D.

Puducherry

Correct Answer: C

Detailed Solution

Diu has been one of the pioneering regions of India in the use of solar energy. In 2018, it was recognised as the first Union Territory region of India to run on 100 percent solar energy.

Diu developed a 9 MW solar park over nearly 50 hectares of barren land and also installed rooftop solar panels on government buildings. As a result, its electricity requirement during daytime began to be met entirely through renewable energy.

Before the development of these solar projects, Diu imported about 73 percent of its electricity requirement from Gujarat. Increased solar generation significantly reduced its dependence on imported electricity.

Current status: Diu is no longer a separate Union Territory. It is now part of the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. It continues to be an important renewable-energy example; in 2025, its entire daytime electricity demand was reported to be met through solar energy.
