The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Jal Shakti launched the 10 Year Rural Sanitation Strategy (2019–2029) on 27 September 2019.

The strategy aimed to sustain the sanitation gains and behavioural change achieved under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Grameen (SBM-G) and to move rural areas from ODF to ODF Plus.

Its two major goals were to sustain access to safely managed sanitation for all rural households and to create a clean rural environment through solid and liquid waste management. The strategy is also aligned with SDG 6 — Clean Water and Sanitation.
