Detailed Solution
The headquarters of the ICAR–National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) is located at Karnal, Haryana. It is a premier national institution in the fields of dairy research, dairy education and dairy technology in India.
The Institute originated in 1923 at Bengaluru as the Imperial Institute of Animal Husbandry and Dairying. It was subsequently renamed the Imperial Dairy Institute.
In 1955, the headquarters of the Institute was shifted from Bengaluru to Karnal and it was renamed the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI). The old Bengaluru establishment subsequently continued as its Southern Regional Station.
The work of NDRI is not confined merely to milk production; research and human-resource development are also undertaken in areas such as animal breeding, dairy cattle nutrition, dairy technology, milk processing, dairy microbiology and dairy economics.
The Institute also has an Eastern Regional Station at Kalyani, West Bengal. NDRI was granted the status of a Deemed University in 1989.
