PMAY-U was launched on 25 June 2015 with the objective of Housing for All. Its original guidelines provided for implementation of the Mission from 2015 to 2022, with the objective of providing a pucca house to all eligible urban households by 2022.

The scheme primarily sought to address the urban housing requirements of the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Low Income Group (LIG), Middle Income Group (MIG) and slum dwellers.

PMAY-U initially had four major verticals—In-situ Slum Redevelopment, Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme, Affordable Housing in Partnership and Beneficiary Led Construction.

An important reason for fixing 2022 as the target year was that India was completing 75 years of Independence in that year.

Current Status

The original PMAY-U period was subsequently extended to facilitate completion of sanctioned houses. According to the Government's July 2026 statement, it has been extended up to 30 September 2026.

In addition, PMAY-U 2.0 has been implemented from 1 September 2024 for the period 2024-2029. It aims to support the housing needs of one crore additional eligible urban families over five years.
