Detailed Solution
The Planning Commission constituted the Committee on Vision 2020 for India in June 2000 under the chairmanship of Dr. S. P. Gupta. Its final report was presented in December 2002.
The document presented a long-term vision for developing a more prosperous, educated, healthy and equitable India by 2020. It covered several areas including employment, education, agriculture, industry, infrastructure, health, technology, environment and governance.
The Report envisaged that annual GDP growth of about 8.5–9% could lead to an approximately fourfold increase in real per-capita income and almost eliminate the percentage of Indians living below the poverty line. It also highlighted the need to generate nearly 200 million additional employment opportunities over about two decades.
