Previous Year Question

The Homi Bhabha Award is associated with special contributions to Nuclear Energy in the context of this examination question. The award is named after Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha, regarded as the father of India's nuclear programme. The Homi Bhabha Science and Technology Award instituted by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) has been among the major awards recognising scientific and technological achievements in institutions associated with nuclear research.

Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha (1909–1966) established the institutional foundations of nuclear research in India. He founded the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in 1945 and the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay (AEET), in January 1954. Following his death, AEET was renamed the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in 1967.

Nuclear Energy is the energy contained within the atomic nucleus, which can be released through controlled nuclear fission. In nuclear power plants, the heat generated by fission is used to produce steam and drive turbines for electricity generation. India's nuclear programme also encompasses medicine, agriculture, industry, and scientific research, in addition to energy production.

Distinction among the options: Theoretical Physics studies the fundamental principles of matter and energy; Laser Physics concerns the amplification of light and its applications; and Space Research deals with space phenomena and technologies. It is important to distinguish among the various awards named after Homi Bhabha. The DAE's Homi Bhabha Science and Technology Award has recognised broader scientific and technological contributions, rather than being restricted exclusively to nuclear electricity generation.
