Correct Answer: A
Detailed Solution
NEERI stands for the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute. Its headquarters is located at Nehru Marg, Nagpur, Maharashtra.
The Institute was established in Nagpur in 1958 as the Central Public Health Engineering Research Institute (CPHERI). Initially, its main focus was on problems relating to water supply, sewage disposal, communicable diseases and industrial pollution.
As the scope of environmental concerns expanded, the Institute was renamed the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) in 1974 by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
NEERI is a constituent laboratory of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and carries out research in environmental science and engineering. Its areas of work include air pollution, water and wastewater treatment, solid and hazardous waste, environmental monitoring, environmental impact assessment and sustainable development.
An important option-trap is that NEERI also has Zonal Centres in Mumbai and Chennai, but its Headquarters is at Nagpur. At present, its zonal centres are located at Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai.
