Correct Answer: D

Detailed Solution

The high population density of Dhanbad is explained not by a single factor but by the combined effect of mineral resources, mining-based industrialisation and the geographical-economic conditions of the Damodar Valley.

Dhanbad lies in one of the major coal belts of the Chhota Nagpur Plateau. The district is particularly important for the Jharia Coalfield, which contains highly significant deposits of high-quality coking coal in India. Coal mining attracted a large population of mine workers, transport workers and people employed in associated industries.

The availability of minerals led not only to the development of mines but also encouraged coal washeries, coke plants, thermal power, engineering and other mineral-based industries. Official district information also describes the uplands of Dhanbad as containing coal mines and most of the industries.

The Chhota Nagpur Plateau as a whole is rich in coal, iron ore, mica, copper and other minerals. Within this mineral belt, the Dhanbad-Bokaro industrial region developed around coal, steel, refractories and coal-based power industries.

To the south of the Damodar River, Dhanbad district also has relatively flat cultivable lands. The objectives of the Damodar Valley Project included irrigation, along with flood control and power generation, supporting agricultural and economic activities in the Damodar Valley.

Thus, employment opportunities encouraged migration, mining settlements grew, and transport, trade and urban centres expanded around them.
