A.

3

B.

6

C.

9

D.

12

Correct Answer: B

Detailed Solution

In January 2020, the addition of 10 new wetlands of India to the list of Ramsar Sites was announced. Of these, the largest number—6 sites—were from Uttar Pradesh.

The 6 Ramsar Sites added from Uttar Pradesh were—

  1. Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary

  2. Parvati Arga Bird Sanctuary

  3. Saman Bird Sanctuary

  4. Samaspur Bird Sanctuary

  5. Sandi Bird Sanctuary

  6. Sarsai Nawar Jheel

At that time, Upper Ganga River (Brijghat to Narora Stretch) was already a Ramsar Site in Uttar Pradesh. Thus, after the addition of these 6 wetlands, the number of Ramsar Sites in the State increased from 1 to 7.

A Ramsar Site is a wetland recognised as being of international importance under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. The Convention was adopted at Ramsar, Iran, in 1971, and India became a party to it in 1982.

Current status: The number of Ramsar Sites in Uttar Pradesh continued to increase in subsequent years. The State had 10 sites by 2025; with the addition of Patna Bird Sanctuary, Shekha Jheel Bird Sanctuary and Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary (Surha Tal) in 2026, the number has increased to 13.
