Operation Green was launched in Uttar Pradesh on July 1, 2001 with the objective of promoting plantation and increasing tree cover in the State.

The programme emphasised participation not only by the Forest Department but also by different government departments, educational institutions, social organisations and local communities. Its broader purpose was environmental conservation through large-scale plantation.
