A.

2004

B.

2003

C.

2002

D.

2001

Correct Answer: B

Detailed Solution

The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Orders (Amendment) Act, 2002 received Presidential assent as Act No. 10 of 2003 on 7 January 2003. It amended the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) (Uttar Pradesh) Order, 1967 and added ten new tribal entries to the ST list of Uttar Pradesh.

These included the Gond group—Gond, Dhuria, Nayak, Ojha, Pathari, Raj Gond; Kharwar/Khairwar; Saharya; Parahiya; Baiga; Pankha/Panika; Agariya; Patari; Chero and Bhuiya/Bhuinya, which were accorded Scheduled Tribe status in specified districts. The recognition did not apply uniformly throughout Uttar Pradesh but was linked to the districts specified in the Act.

An important point is that the title of the Act contains “2002”, but it became Act No. 10 of 2003 on 7 January 2003.

Current status: The Second Amendment of 2022 further extended ST recognition for Gond, Dhuria, Nayak, Ojha, Pathari and Raj Gond to the districts of Sant Kabir Nagar, Kushinagar, Chandauli and Bhadohi.
