LASER का पूर्ण रूप है—Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation। अर्थात laser का मूल सिद्धान्त Stimulated Emission of Radiation है।
Stimulated emission में पहले कोई atom या molecule excited state में होता है। जब उचित energy वाला photon उसके पास आता है, तो वह excited atom को lower energy state में आने के लिए stimulate करता है। इस transition के दौरान एक दूसरा photon निकलता है।
इस प्रक्रिया की महत्वपूर्ण विशेषता यह है कि नया emitted photon stimulating photon के साथ same frequency, phase और direction में होता है। बार-बार होने वाले stimulated emission के कारण light का amplification होता है और अत्यधिक coherent, directional तथा लगभग monochromatic beam प्राप्त होती है।
