Detailed Solution

Iron Dome is Israel's Air and Missile Defence System. Its development was led by the Israel Missile Defense Organization (IMDO) under the Israel Ministry of Defense, while Rafael Advanced Defense Systems is its principal developer/contractor.

Its development programme was launched in 2007, and the system became operational in 2011. It was primarily developed to intercept short-range rockets and other aerial threats.

Iron Dome uses a radar to detect and track incoming threats, a Battle Management and Control System to assess the threat, and an interceptor to destroy the threat.

The United States has provided significant cooperation in the development, funding and production of Iron Dome, and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency is also a partner in the production of its components. Nevertheless, Iron Dome was originally developed by Israel and forms part of Israel's national air-defence architecture.
