Detailed Solution

ISRO successfully launched Chandrayaan-2 on 22 July 2019 using the GSLV MkIII-M1 launch vehicle.

The launch took place from the Second Launch Pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR, Sriharikota, at 2:43 PM IST.

GSLV MkIII-M1 placed the approximately 3840 kg Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft into an elliptical Earth orbit. It was the first operational flight of GSLV MkIII.

GSLV MkIII is a three-stage launch vehicle. It uses two S200 solid strap-on motors, one L110 liquid core stage, and a C25 cryogenic upper stage.

Chandrayaan-2 mainly consisted of an Orbiter, Vikram Lander and Pragyan Rover. Its objective was to study the Moon, particularly the lunar polar region, including its surface composition, mineralogy, topography and other scientific characteristics.
