BRAHMOS is a supersonic cruise missile system developed under a joint venture between India and Russia.

For this purpose, an Inter-Governmental Agreement was signed between India and Russia on 12 February 1998. Subsequently, BrahMos Aerospace was established.

In this Joint Venture, DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) represents India, while NPO Mashinostroyenia (NPOM) represents Russia.

The name BRAHMOS is derived from the names of India's Brahmaputra River and Russia's Moskva River.

The missile system has been developed for launch from land, ship, aircraft and submarine platforms and can be employed against land and sea targets.
