SIM का उपयोग mobile telecommunication network में किसी subscriber/user की पहचान और authentication से संबंधित information को सुरक्षित रखने के लिए किया जाता है।

इसमें subscriber की पहचान से संबंधित unique telecommunication identifier तथा authentication के लिए आवश्यक keys सुरक्षित रखी जा सकती हैं।

SIM केवल traditional removable card तक सीमित नहीं है; आधुनिक telecommunications में e-SIM और iSIM जैसे अन्य form factors भी उपयोग किए जाते हैं।
