Which one of the following states is ranked economically at the top but lowest on the basis of sex ratio?

A.

Madhya Pradesh

B.

Maharashtra

C.

West Bengal

D.

Haryana

Correct Answer: D

Detailed Solution

Haryana is among India's economically developed states, but according to Census 2011, it had the lowest Sex Ratio among all Indian states. According to the Government of India's Economic Survey 2013–14, Haryana ranked first in terms of Per Capita Income, whereas Maharashtra ranked first in terms of total Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP).

According to Census 2011, Haryana had a Sex Ratio of 879 females per 1,000 males, compared with the national average of 943. Among the other states given in the question, Madhya Pradesh had a Sex Ratio of 931, Maharashtra 929, and West Bengal 950. Thus, Haryana had the lowest Sex Ratio among the four options.

Sex Ratio and Child Sex Ratio are different demographic indicators. Sex Ratio represents the number of females per 1,000 males in the entire population, whereas Child Sex Ratio generally represents the number of girls per 1,000 boys in the 0–6 age group. According to Census 2011, Haryana had a Child Sex Ratio of 834, which was below the national average of 918.

Economic Development and Demographic Balance are different concepts. Per Capita Income is an indicator of the average economic income of a state, whereas Sex Ratio represents the gender composition of its population. A high income level does not necessarily imply a balanced Sex Ratio. Sex Ratio can be influenced by the Sex Ratio at Birth, mortality rates, migration, and other demographic and social factors.
