A. 42nd Constitutional Amendment — 1976 (3)

The 42nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1976, introduced extensive changes to the Indian Constitution.

It inserted the words Socialist, Secular and Integrity into the Preamble. Additionally, it introduced Part IVA into the Constitution, providing for the Fundamental Duties of citizens.

The amendment also inserted Articles 39A, 43A and 48A into the Directive Principles of State Policy. These provisions concern free legal aid, workers' participation in the management of industries and environmental protection.

The amendment also modified the Seventh Schedule and transferred subjects such as education and forests from the State List to the Concurrent List.

B. 52nd Constitutional Amendment — 1985 (1)

The 52nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1985, inserted the Tenth Schedule into the Constitution.

This amendment deals with the disqualification of Members of Parliament and State Legislatures on the ground of defection.

Under its provisions, a member of a political party may be subject to disqualification if they voluntarily give up their party membership or vote against the party's directions under specified circumstances.

The amendment also inserted provisions relating to disqualification on the ground of defection into Articles 102 and 191.

C. 86th Constitutional Amendment — 2002 (4)

The 86th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2002, granted constitutional recognition to the Right to Education as a Fundamental Right.

It inserted Article 21A, according to which the State shall provide free and compulsory education to all children between 6 and 14 years of age.

The same amendment modified Article 45 to provide for early childhood care and education and inserted Article 51A(k), establishing the Fundamental Duty of parents or guardians to provide educational opportunities to their children.

D. 96th Constitutional Amendment — 2011 (2)

The 96th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2011, changed the name of a language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.

Through this amendment, the word Oriya in entry 15 of the Eighth Schedule was replaced with Odia.

The amendment was enacted on 23 September 2011.

An important fact is that this amendment did not add any new language to the Eighth Schedule. It only changed the name of an already included language.
