Previous Year Question

At which of the following places do the Alaknanda and the Bhagirathi rivers meet?

A.

Dev Prayag

B.

Vishnu Prayag

C.

Rudra Prayag

D.

Karna Prayag

Correct Answer: A

Detailed Solution

At Devprayag in Uttarakhand, the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers meet. From this confluence onwards, the combined river is known as the Ganga. Devprayag is situated in Tehri Garhwal district at an elevation of about 472 metres.

The Bhagirathi comes from the Gangotri glacier region, whereas the Alaknanda is associated with the Satopanth and Bhagirath Kharak glacier region. After their confluence at Devprayag, they flow onward as the Ganga.

Devprayag is the lowest of the famous Panch Prayag of Uttarakhand. Their sequence from upstream to downstream is—Vishnuprayag → Nandprayag → Karnaprayag → Rudraprayag → Devprayag.

For option elimination, remember the important confluences—Alaknanda–Dhauliganga at Vishnuprayag, Alaknanda–Pindar at Karnaprayag and Alaknanda–Mandakini at Rudraprayag.

For examination purposes, remember—Bhagirathi + Alaknanda → Devprayag → Ganga.
