Which of the following ocean currents is associated with Indian Ocean?
A.
Florida current
B.
Canary current
C.
Agulhas current
D.
Kurile current
Correct Answer: C
Detailed Solution
The Agulhas Current is a major warm ocean current of the Indian Ocean. It is a powerful Western Boundary Current of the southern Indian Ocean and generally flows south-westward along the south-eastern coast of Africa.
On reaching the southern part of South Africa, most of the Agulhas Current turns back eastward. This process is known as the Agulhas Retroflection.
Some of its warm and saline water also enters the South Atlantic Ocean in the form of rings and filaments. This is known as Agulhas Leakage and forms an important mechanism of water exchange between the Indian and Atlantic Oceans.
