Previous Year Question

Darling range is situated along which of the following coasts of Australia?

A.

North-Eastern Coast

B.

Southern Coast

C.

Eastern Coast

D.

South-Western Coast

Correct Answer: D

Detailed Solution

The Darling Range is located in the south-western part of the State of Western Australia. It extends broadly in a north-south direction east of Perth.

Its western margin is expressed as the Darling Scarp. The Swan Coastal Plain lies to its west, while the Darling Plateau extends towards the east. Thus, it forms an important physiographic feature of south-western Australia.

Geologically, the Darling Range is associated with the uplifted western edge of the ancient Yilgarn Block. Its foundation is composed mainly of very old crystalline rocks.

South-western Australia experiences a Mediterranean-type climate—comparatively warm and dry summers and cool/wet winters. Due to the elevation of the Darling Scarp, orographic rainfall can also be higher here than over the adjoining coastal plain.
