Pir-Panjal and Mahabharat ranges
Correct Answer: B
Detailed Solution
The Kashmir Valley is an oval-shaped intermontane valley located in the north-western Himalayas. The Pir-Panjal Range lies to its south and south-west, while the Great/Himadri Himalaya lies to its north and north-east.
The valley floor has an average elevation of about 1,800 metres above mean sea level. It extends mainly across the Srinagar, Anantnag, Pulwama, Budgam, Baramulla and Kupwara regions.
The Pir-Panjal Range separates the Kashmir Valley from the Jammu region and the plains towards the south. Banihal Pass is an important route in this mountain system and has historically played an important role in connecting the Jammu region with the Kashmir Valley.
The Jhelum River is the principal drainage artery within the Kashmir Valley. Lakes and old lacustrine deposits also form important features of its relatively flat valley floor.
