The highest peak of Indian Peninsula is

A.

Ootakamund

B.

Anaimudi

C.

Dodabeta

D.

Mahabaleshwar

Correct Answer: B

Detailed Solution

Anaimudi/Anamudi is the highest peak of the Indian Peninsula. It has an elevation of 2,695 metres and is located in the Western Ghats in Idukki district of Kerala.

Anamudi lies within Eravikulam National Park. According to Kerala Tourism, it is not only the highest peak of South India but also the highest point in India outside the Himalayan mountain ranges.

The peak forms part of the high mountain region of the Anaimalai Hills/southern Western Ghats. The surrounding area contains a shola-grassland ecosystem, which provides an important habitat for several endemic species, including the Nilgiri Tahr.

Among the options, Ootakamund (Ooty) is a hill station, not a mountain peak. Doddabetta is about 2,623 metres high and is the highest peak of Tamil Nadu and the Nilgiri Hills, but it is lower than Anamudi. Mahabaleshwar is a hill station in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra.
