Previous Year Question

In which State the Nelong Valley is located?

A.

Himachal Pradesh

B.

Jammu & Kashmir

C.

Sikkim

D.

Uttarakhand

Correct Answer: D

Detailed Solution

Nelong Valley is a high-Himalayan valley located in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. It lies in an Inner Line Area near the India-China border and is situated about 100 km from the Uttarkashi district headquarters.

Nelong Valley is included among the important high-altitude areas of Gangotri National Park. Its landscape is different from the commonly seen green Himalayan terrain and is characterised by Cold Desert Topography.

The valley was historically associated with an India-Tibet trade route. Because of its strategic location, entry into the region is regulated and tourism is subject to prescribed rules and permissions.

A useful examination linkage is—Nelong Valley → Uttarkashi → Uttarakhand → Gangotri National Park → India-China border → Cold Desert.
