Previous Year Question

Which one of the following is the main area for producing ‘Tidal Energy’?

A.

Gulf of Bengal

B.

Gulf of Mannar

C.

Gulf of Khambhat (Cambay)

D.

Gulf of Kutch

Correct Answer: C

Detailed Solution

The Gulf of Khambhat (Cambay) is located on the western coast of Gujarat and is one of India's most important regions in terms of Tidal Energy potential.

Tidal energy is obtained from the difference in sea level between High Tide and Low Tide. Areas with a large tidal range and a gulf or estuary configuration that concentrates tidal water possess greater potential for tidal-power generation. The geographical configuration of the Gulf of Khambhat is favourable for this purpose.

According to information provided by the Government of India in 2012, India's tidal-energy potential was estimated at about 8,000 MW. Of this, about 7,000 MW was estimated in the Gulf of Khambhat, 1,200 MW in the Gulf of Kutch, and about 100 MW in the Gangetic Delta of the Sundarbans.
