Previous Year Question

On which one of the following rivers is ‘Tulbul’ Project located?

A.

Chenab

B.

Ravi

C.

Beas

D.

Jhelum

Correct Answer: D

Detailed Solution

The Tulbul Navigation Project is located on the Jhelum River in Jammu and Kashmir. The project site is just below the exit of the Jhelum from Wular Lake, in the Baramulla region.

The basic objective of the project was to regulate the flow of water in the Jhelum so as to maintain an adequate water level for navigation during months of low river flow. Controlled releases were particularly envisaged during the lean season from October to February.

The Tulbul Project has also figured in India-Pakistan discussions concerning the Indus Waters Treaty, 1960. Thus, rather than remembering it merely as a river-project question, it is more useful to link Jhelum–Wular–Tulbul together.

Therefore, the correct option is (d) Jhelum.
