Gobi Desert Central/East Asia का विशाल cold desert और semi-desert region है। इसका प्रमुख विस्तार southern Mongolia और northern/north-western China में है। NASA भी इसे Mongolia और China दोनों में फैला लगभग 1.3 million वर्ग किमी का विशाल desert region बताता है।

गोबी को केवल विशाल sand dunes वाला रेगिस्तान समझना सही नहीं है। इसके बड़े भाग में rocky plains, gravel surfaces, steppe और semi-desert landscapes पाए जाते हैं। कुछ क्षेत्रों में बड़े sand dunes भी विकसित हैं।

यह एक cold desert है, जहाँ continental location के कारण तापमान में बहुत अधिक seasonal variation मिलता है—ग्रीष्मकाल गर्म हो सकता है, जबकि winter अत्यंत ठंडा होता है। आसपास की पर्वत प्रणालियाँ moisture को रोकती हैं, जिससे region में बहुत कम precipitation प्राप्त होती है।

UNESCO का Great Gobi Biosphere Reserve south-western Mongolia में China की सीमा के निकट स्थित है, जो Gobi के transboundary geographical character को भी स्पष्ट करता है।
