Previous Year Question
The river situated along the border between the United States of America and Mexico is -
The Colorado
The Mississippi
The Amazon
The Rio Grande
Correct Answer: D
Detailed Solution
The Rio Grande is a major river of North America, and a long section of its course forms the international boundary between the United States and Mexico.
According to the International Boundary and Water Commission, the U.S.–Mexico continental boundary is about 1,954 miles long. Of this, approximately 1,255 miles follow the centreline of the Rio Grande, extending from the Gulf of Mexico to the El Paso, Texas–Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua area.
The international boundary is historically associated with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo of 1848, which established the Rio Grande as part of the boundary between the two countries. Later treaties and agreements further defined the river boundary and rules concerning changes in its channel.
It should be noted that the Colorado River also crosses between the United States and Mexico and forms a much shorter section of the international boundary, but the principal and much longer river boundary between the two countries is formed by the Rio Grande. The Mississippi flows within the United States, whereas the Amazon is located in South America.
