Aberdeen Scotland के north-east coast पर स्थित है और North Sea oil and gas industry के विकास के कारण इसे लंबे समय से “Oil Capital of Europe” कहा जाता रहा है।

विशेष रूप से 1960 और 1970 के दशकों में North Sea में बड़े petroleum reserves की खोज के बाद Aberdeen offshore oil and gas exploration, engineering, subsea technology, drilling services तथा petroleum-related supply chain का प्रमुख centre बन गया। इसके harbour और North Sea oil fields के निकट स्थान ने भी इसके विकास में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई।

समय के साथ Aberdeen की पहचान केवल petroleum तक सीमित नहीं रही। Offshore engineering में विकसित expertise का उपयोग renewable energy, offshore wind, hydrogen और energy-transition technologies में भी किया जा रहा है। इसी कारण वर्तमान official planning documents में Aberdeen को प्रायः “Energy Capital of Europe” भी कहा जाता है। Scotland के official records में भी इसके ऐतिहासिक designation “oil capital of Europe” और बाद के “energy capital” दोनों का उल्लेख मिलता है।
