Previous Year Question

Which one of the following is not correctly matched?

A.

World's tallest waterfall — Tugela Falls

B.

World's largest fresh water lake — Lake Superior

C.

World's highest navigable lake — Lake Titicaca

D.

World's second deepest lake — Lake Tanganyika

Correct Answer: A

Detailed Solution

In the conventional and official geographical classification, Tugela Falls is regarded as the second-tallest waterfall in the world. It is situated in the Drakensberg Mountains of South Africa. The South African Government also describes it as the world's second-tallest waterfall. Therefore, describing it as the world's tallest waterfall is not correct in the context of this question.

Lake Superior is the world's largest freshwater lake by surface area. It covers approximately 82,000 km² and is the largest of the Great Lakes situated along the United States–Canada border.

Lake Titicaca lies on the Peru–Bolivia border in the Andean Altiplano at an elevation of approximately 3,800 metres. It is commonly described as the world's highest navigable lake or highest major navigable lake.

Lake Tanganyika is situated in East Africa and, with a maximum depth of about 1,470 metres, is the second-deepest lake in the world after Lake Baikal. It is shared by Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania and Zambia.

Current note: Some newer measurements and tourism sources have suggested that Tugela Falls may actually be taller than Angel Falls. However, several authoritative sources, including the South African Government, still describe Tugela as the second-tallest waterfall.
