दिए गए चार देशों में Japan के कुल भौगोलिक क्षेत्रफल का सबसे अधिक प्रतिशत वनों से आच्छादित है। Japan का अधिकांश भूभाग पर्वतीय है और बड़े क्षेत्रों में प्राकृतिक तथा planted forests पाए जाते हैं।

Japan के Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries के अनुसार देश में लगभग 25.02 million hectares forest area है, जो उसके कुल land area का लगभग 67% है। अर्थात् Japan के लगभग दो-तिहाई भूभाग पर forests पाए जाते हैं।

Japan के forest area का एक महत्वपूर्ण भाग artificial/planted forests का भी है। द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध के बाद timber demand को पूरा करने के लिए बड़े पैमाने पर cedar और cypress जैसी species का plantation किया गया था। वर्तमान में Japan के forests soil conservation, watershed protection, biodiversity conservation और carbon absorption जैसे ecological functions भी निभाते हैं।
